Firstly I have to blurt out a superficial comment: There were so many fabulous Kurt outfits here that I can't even...

Well aside from that, I'm ready for my NY stories. Despite the fact that Santana has never been my favorite character I can see these storyline working better than anything they give at us from McKinley/Lima axis. I didn't like the Diva song at all. I felt they were just rudely and with weak results copying Lady Gaga theme from way back.

The Blaine/Tina interactions would be so much better if Tina hadn't been Kurt's friend and had never fought against bullies with him and actually hadn't seen Kurt being in love with Blaine! I can see a straight girl crushing and being in love with a cool, symphatic friend-guy, who just happens to be gay. Being gay isn't the obstacle for her here: BUUUUT the good girl can turn the gay man straight is just such a bad and old storyline! The Tina we have been introduced for the past three years is not this Tina and someone should hit Blaine with an anvil since his unawareness and selfishness just keeps going on and on. Yes, it's also weird that atleast three portraits of Kurt and Kurt with Blaine didn't deterre Tina from going for it, admitting she's in love with Blaine. Hello, you were looking pictures of Blaine with his ex-boyfriend, who apparently used to be your friend. It would have made the scene a lot more tolerable if she had at that moment, after Blaine passing out and with those pictures, gotten what a fool she was becoming, not on Glee though, they have to humiliate their characters.

Oh, Kurt! I have so missed you, that scene with the tea-pot had me snickering. Lea and Chris should do nothing but fight, laugh and cry together and Glee would be my favorite show ever. I love the fact that they admit in canon that Rachel actually has considered Kurt as a viable competition ever since Defying Gravity, since she was so shocked from Kurt's confession. Midnight madness consept was nicely executed, it wasn't farfetched and can see that kind of extra curricular happening in a performance art schools. You can't really compete around the teachers. It was also well done reprisal of their Defying Gravity competition, the Kurtsie in me would have liked Kurt to get the final note of BHH, but we can't have everything. Embarassed

Kurt can always defend himself, but it is nice to notice how deeply his and Rachel's friendship goes. Even she, when angry and selfish, found it in her heart to defend Kurt. Kurt coming to Rachel after her defeat was given, I had no doubt he wouldn't do that, Rachel however is another matter, so positively suprised of that.

Because NY is given so little time everything feel speeded up and pushed forward too quickly. They would have made an entire season with the storylines happening in NY so far, but we never see that! Oh, the wasted opportunities of Vogue, Kurt fretting after Carmen attacking his lack of talent, Rachel talking endlessly about Brody, Kurt coping from a break-up then meeting Adam and now Santana arriving. F*ck why am I doing this to myself! beam

I loved Kurt's storyline this week (the less said about McKinley the better, though I noticed noticed that Jenna acted much better than Darren).

Kurt finally won like he deserved, and Rachel knows the truth about Defying Gravity! I was really impressed with Kurt's handling of Rachel at the end of the episode, he was so mature and caring, as well as the way he dealt with the annoying sycophants. You also realize how mature Kurt is when compared to Rachel, as Rachel is either a sore loser or mopey and feels sorry for herself when she loses, but Kurt has always been supportive when he loses things to others.

So, first let me get the rest out of the way:

Are we supposed to feel sorry for Tina? She calls Santana but then is pissed that she shows up at McKinley? Evil or Very Mad
And her crush on Blaine….. the vapo-rub scene was really creepy. Tina might not mean it that way (and I think the writers want us to believe it was sweet), but she unbuttoned a boy’s shirt, straddled him and touched him while he was asleep: that was Fatal Attraction levels of creepy. And yeah, let’s compare this to Kurt’s crush on Finn back when they wanted to burn him on a stake for that. brikwol
And Blaine even apologized to her! Why should Blaine have to apologize to Tina? BTW: I believe this was one of the few episodes I kinda liked Blaine.
Someone slap me. pauly

Femma….. Finn taking over Will’s gleeclub, coffee mug, feud with Sue, and now even his fiancee. I thought the kiss was an honest mistake of Finn, but really writers: do we have to do this all over again? Older female feels alone and freaks out, valiant young ‘manboy’ swoops in to calm and resque her. Sound familiar?
Finn naming Rachel, Santana and Mercedes ND's ‘big brassy voices’,…. oh, and even Kurt. Right, and when did Kurt sing for ND exactly? And no, Blaine can’t do that too, Emma, his Queen song alone proved that. mince

The transitions to most of the songs were very contrived and artificial, imo. The New York song at least made sense in the narrative, but all the Lima songs were basically all set up like cheap porn films: every single dialogue leads to sex, and the sooner the better. When Naya is singing that’s usually results in good, steamy sex, but still…..
The Santana storyline was very chopped up (mostly because of the many songs squeezed into it), and it didn’t make much sense to me. I’m not a fan of Bram because they seriously endanger my brain functioning capacity, but I don’t get why Santana would be so offended by Sam of all people? She was the one who gave Brittany up after all. I also don’t really understand why they had to have her paying a girl to play her gf: it added nothing and Santana wouldn’t need something like that.
Her songs were good though, but I would have traded at least one of them for a better told story.

As a Hummelberry fan I should be pissed that Santana just waltzed into their Bushwick adobe unannounced and declared that she was moving in, but their faces were so hilarious that I just had to laugh. moque

Post  Glorfindel 2/8/2013, 10:40 am

Now the most important part of the episode, but first let me say that Kurt looked very grown-up (butch!) and ravishly beautiful this episode.
Really, if he keeps this up we all need extra oxygen to be able to keep watching him on our screen. ded

I loved the Kurt vs. Rachel quarrel! Best part of the episode. And NYADA is finally getting fleshed out, yay!
Kurt’s voice over with Rachel obnoxiously singing in the background: hilarious! Also loved the callback to ‘Defying Gravity’ and Kurt setting the record straight on that one. vexe

Their fight wasn’t too bad, imo, just a lot of build up annoyance being vented by Kurt, and about time, I’d say. I didn’t even see it as him knocking Rachel down a peg or 2, just bringing her down to earth again (which, lbr, Rachel needs from time to time). Rachel was back in diva mode again: that’s part of her character. She needs that confidence (and withers without it), but can take it too far.
Having high morals (and being uptight because of them sometimes) is part of Kurt’s character. I don’t see why being a basically good and brave person (he is Burt’s son after all) who refuses to take crap from bullies anymore should by any means justify this everlasting demeaning St. Kurt nickname again on another forum (TWoP), especially not this time. Evil or Very Mad

Rachel and Kurt complement each other, they correct each other when necessary, and that’s a big part of why they are friends. I liked that Rachel still defended Kurt to the 2 sycophants even when they had just had a tiff, and I liked how Kurt gave Rachel a pep-talk in the end as well (although I would have loved seeing him celebrate his win some more, instead of having to console Rachel again). They still care for each other a lot, so imo all’s well in the Hummelberry loft again. hapitgh

‘Bring Him Home' was divided up quite good in the episode (and Kurt won!!!!!). I wished they could have sung the last note together, but I guess it had to be done that way because they wanted to continue the scene after Rachel’s solo. They were both excellent, but I’m glad that this diva-off showed that vocal technical power alone is not all there is to singing: the ability to connect emotionally to a song is just as important, if not more so. suure

And yay, snarky Kurt is back! Him calling out the 2 sycophants was wonderful, and so was Adam’s face watching it unfold. Smile
Speaking of which: did Kurt and Adam become an item off screen? If Brittany knew that Kurt had found a new guy like Rachel, wouldn't that sort of confirm it? Can’t have the gays have their first kiss on screen, Glee? Or are they still just friends? unsure

Everytime I see this kind of caricaturish gays on tv like were the sycophants the more I respect Chris for his portraying of Kurt. Kurt is supposed be a character with some feminine qualities and it would be very easy to exaggerate him, oveacts him... I know the role was created for Chris but if different actor played the character who knows what Kurt would be like.

And to think that this (the sycophants) was how the writers wanted Chris to play Kurt. unsure
Chris brought so much more to the character.

AfterElton "Glee" Recap 4.13

The theme of Brooklyn life this week is DIVA! also, and the way you knew this episode was going to be good is that it opened with a Kurt Hummel monologue. I feel like we've been deprived of his voice for so long! It's like cool spring water after weeks of drinking sand! Well, but Kurt has had it with Rachel 2.0. She's as egomaniacal as Lima Rachel, but with 100 percent more bangs and sycophantic entourages and weirdly naked boyfriends. Kurt tells her exactly that when she starts ringing a bell for her morning tea and bossing him around with flash cards so as not to injure her voice. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

Kurt: Hey, remember all the worst things about you from Ohio? They still exist, only Santana and Quinn aren't here to keep me from killing you.
Rachel: I knew I could only treat you like shit for a matter of time before you told me to stop acting like a bitch.
Kurt: Obviously the only way to slay the dragon of your id is for me to destroy you with my voice, so I challenge you to that thing like they did in Pitch Perfect, but more like one-on-one.
Rachel: Didn't we do something like this several hundred times in previous seasons? And didn't I beat you every time?
Kurt: Well, for one thing, my voice, like my supernatural good looks, are growing exponentially awesomer every day. And for another thing, I let you win because it weirded out my dad back then that I could sing like an angel.
Rachel: All of my confidence was built on that one moment of beating you!
Kurt: That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Your confidence has always been built on whatever guy is boffing you.
Rachel: Fine, let's do this.

Brody explains the Midnight Madness like it's some kind of vocal deathmatch, which would actually be a good way to lose some of these new characters no one seems to care about. The song the NYADA fight club chooses is Jean Valjean's "Bring Him Home," and I don't mind telling you that just the three notes from Chris Colfer moved me in a way that Tom Hooper's entire film did not. Adam of Adam's Apples is in attendance and has strategically placed himself at the very edge of the stage so he can experience the maximum impact of Kurt's voice and also so he can sit by him and maybe hold his hand or at the very least smile self-deprecatingly at him in that special adorable way British people do. (Snicks says Adam looks like homeless Neil Patrick Harris. It's the most correct description I have ever heard.) The song is gorgeous. They both sound incredible. Kurt wins by half a note.

All of Rachel's hopes — well, the Funny Girl revival ones, at least — are dashed. Kurt lets her fall down about seven notches before he gently prods her back up four notches, just enough that she's still Rachel Berry, but without the flash cards and the sycophants.

Speaking of whom: Kurt tests out Adam's boyfriend potential by measuring his ability to listen to him talk about Rachel's need and feelings for hours and hours. Adam, however, is more interested in talking about how Kurt deserved to win the sing-off and also about how he should stop hiding his light under a bushel. Rachel's minions, the same ones who were clowning on Kurt and his Apples ten minutes ago, run up to him and talk real fast about how he's the bee's knees and how he just has to do whatever Broadway kid thing with them. Kurt, verbatim:

I don't think so. I think you both are shallow and obnoxious. And I think the only reason run around kissing everyone's as is because you know you'll never make it on your own. And another thing: If you say one more nasty thing about Adam's Apples, I will challenge you to the next Midnight Madness. And we all know how that ends.

Kurt, dude. You are better than a diva. You are a goddamn caped crusader and I love you with all of my whole heart. Also in love, or at least in the verrrry smitten range of emotion is Adam. The way he look at Kurt, it's — I think loving Kurt Hummel gives boys an immediate and incurable case of heart eyes, like, "Just watching you tie your shoelace blows me the fuck away." He tells Kurt that he's impressive, but Kurt doesn't hear the implied and let's make out right now because he's the best best friend and he has to go stitch Rachel back together.

Back in their loft, Kurt and Rachel are enjoying a quiet night in when someone knocks at the door. Santana has made one last loop around McKinley High: the lockers, the classrooms, the theater, the foyer. "Girl on Fire" is the song of her new life, and she owns it. She has walked out the front doors of her high school, for real this time, and walked up the steps of the New York City subway. And now here she is. Rachel and Kurt are both like, "Santana?" And she goes, "Let it burn, baby. Let it burn. Snix is home."

So they wanted Kurt to be like these sycophants? I know it has been commented that Kurt somehow is like the typical gay guy who's portrayed on TV, but if he's compared to those other guys, he has more depth as a person. So I'd say those guys are more stereotypical. And in addition, he's not someone who's gonna kiss the butt of other people, he doesn't need that.

Btw I like AfterElton recap Smile

LOL Maybe the heat of the moment might have helped. But it seems the need to be or even more angry or drunk.

American Idol (13.2 mil/4.1) lost just a few eyeballs and dipped 9 percent in the demo. Glee (6.1 mil/2.2) rose 11 percent and a tenth.

4x13 "Diva" Watch & Discussion thread - Page 3 Empty Re: 4x13 "Diva" Watch & Discussion thread

I watched the Kurt parts when I got off of work. May watch more before I go back this afternoon. I do know I will skip all the creepy Tina scenes. I guess they wanted to show the hopelessness of one-sided love, but they didn't need to do the straddling thing, I think that was a bit much.

On to everything I liked, which was Kurt, of course. Wonderful voice over, wonderful expressions telling the story as we watch Rachel flourish under the praises of people who don't care about her. Rachel really does need applause and adulation. She needs the prop of a boyfriend because her ego is too heavy for her to carry herself. If anyone needs to learn resilience on Glee, it is Rachel. I hope they let her learn it, because she deserves more than to listen to empty headed sycophants (it is a good word) and boyfriends who find it appropriate to walk naked in an apartment with more than his lover in it.

The little bit of Adam was verrrry nice. I think he is just a tiny bit taller than Kurt, and he looked younger without the hat on this episode. I also like that Kurt got to be the defender, going after the people who mocked the Apples, but they didn't make Adam weaker for it, just appreciative.

It would be a kick in the pants if Kurt acknowledges he still loves Blaine, but also loves himself to want to be with someone who makes him feel he is special. With Blaine, you get the unspoken attitude that Kurt is lucky to have him on the show because he is just that amazing, and the forums profess this endlessly. Why should Kurt want to be in a relationship where he will always feel less than his partner? That would wear over time. Even if you love the person, it would turn to resentment, so Kurt chooses this new person, so he can at least maintain his friendship and past love with Blaine intact.

Where it seems they are indicating with Adam that he admires Kurt, it isn't from a lesser position, or greater position, it just feels equal. Adam just seems to have that strength to him, that Blaine does not. Blaine, and Rachel, rarely loses what they want, they don't know how to deal with loss or failure. Rachel at least fights at times before she wins, Blaine is usually just handed what he wants on a silver platter because he is just that amazing.

That kind of makes Blaine passive in his story, and along with his obliviousness, makes him duller than dirt to me. How can he not realize that not setting limits with Tina is allowing her to live in her dream world. Unless they are doing this to reflect Kurt in season 1, and show when either sex has an obsession with someone else it is just creepy. It would be nice if they mentioned all they had Kurt do was a touch on a shoulder and some manipulation. I think it would have wigged him out if something actually happened, where Tina made it obvious she was hoping something did.

That was one long song Santana sang, unless she sang it in the transporter that all Glee kids have. I wonder if the people on the plane got annoyed, or if she just walked to NY. I guess only girls moving to NY get to sing about it, boys just get their wonderful Dad's at the airport. I guess that is better though, hard to trump a Burt Hummel.

Sue and Emma were excellent. I think we have gotten used to only having a handful of really good "kid" actors and forget that all the "adult" performers are really solid performers.

Finn's kiss was inappropriate, but I found it quite within character. He is a guy, a guy with a diva ex-girl friend who talked a lot. Guys don't like upset women, and they want it to stop, like now. You can't hit her, so he kisses her, I am sure that is how he handled Rachel. But he broke the bro-code, which only works if you do it with a girl. If you cheat on a boy, your bro's forgive you. If you break it with a girl, it requires repentance and apologies.

I think Unique should have won diva, because at McKinley, he personifies that position. I just think they wanted to give Tina a big win this year, and that will be that for her happiness. Until she reunites with Mike, to disappear into the closet until the writers find a scene they want her in next year. Well, making out with Mike in the closet while she waits isn't a truly bad fate, I guess.

That is all I recall. I might add more tomorrow, after I watch more of the episode.

Were not the ratings for the previous Kurt VO starting ep also good? This one even more since it had two! fan favorite characters on focus. Also it is note worthy that roughly guessing between Hummelberry and Blaine taking almost 2/3 of the episode and Santana singing the rest, that using these chararters has proven to be a good consept!
