People are trying to ban fanfiction and fanart? Seriously? Shocked

I mean, I got into quite a few fandoms because of their high quality fanfics. Why would anyone want to stomp out the creative expression of fans who love their products?

I always find it amusing how TPTB really don't know how to handle fandom and fanworks. I will agree that no fan has the right to try to make a profit on any fanworks they produce (and outside of paying for things like printing costs for fanzines and artwork, or the cost of production for things like mousepads, t-shirts and coffee mugs, most writers and artists don't try to make a profit on their work). To go after fans for copyright violations for anything that is clearly labled as fan-produced and not for profit, to me, is counterproductive because these are the most loyal, dedicated fans who keep interest in shows alive. Let's face it, Glee right now is surviving basically because of fans like us who post on boards and read and write fanfiction.

And there are some copyright holders that are completely intolerent of any fan produced works and have pretty much killed fandoms outright. The author Mercedes Lackey (who I used to love reading) took advice from her attorney to discourage fan works based on her novels and went after some fans pretty aggresively. Fanfiction archieves had no choice but to delete works and it put a major chill on the fandom (not to mention earning a lot of angry sentiment from fans towards the author). It was ironic because Lackey herself started out writing fanfiction herself and she finally lifted her ban on fan works years later. Lucasfilm has also gone after some fans (who mostly were producing adult-rated material) with cease and desist orders.

I find it amusing that in Japan, TPTB openly encourage fans to product their own stories and comics (called doujinshi) based on their favorite manga and anime and there are numerous fandoms that have absolutely exploded based entirely on the fan-produced works. They are smart enough to recognize that fans who are dedicated enough to spend hours lovingly producing professional-quality doujinshi are the ones who will spend obscene amounts of money on all kinds of official merchendise. And there are numerous shows that are long over that still have intensely active fandoms strictly because of the fan produced works. And they don't sweat the adult-content and yaoi (slash) material because they want all the crazy fans they can get.

I do think that the internet does make things much more complicated for fans, because it has stripped away a lot of the boundaries that used to exist when fanfiction and art was restricted to hard copy zines and prints that you would have to buy at a convention or order through the mail. Now with everything on line either in archives or on LiveJournal, Tumblr, Divent Art or any of the hundreds of outlets, it's everywhere. And while some PTB and actors don't mind this stuff (Nick Lea of X-Files and Richard Burgi of The Sentinel were both pretty notorious for being suppotive of the fan community, including those who wrote slash fiction). But you do have fans who don't recognize that not every actor or producer wants to have the stuff, especially the adult-related works, shoved in their faces. So you get idiot fans who think that it's a good idea to send porny artwork to Chris to retaliate against him when he expressed displeasure about something and some fans got their panties in a bunch. It's fans like this that can end up making things a lot harder for the rest of us.

Just checked the petition and it has obtained the needed number to be passed on to The White House and Congress. Hopefully, we'll be able to prevent this from passing.

Agree it is ridiculous. I may no longer be a big fan of the TV show Glee ,but still am a fan of Glee fanfiction.

After months of anticipation the march towards Glee’s 100th episode commences tonight as current and former members of New Directions reunite to reinvent their favorite past performances. Last week we asked you to nominate your favorite Glee couples to help us determine your all-time favorite romantic duet. After combing through all your wonderful gleetastic comment, we narrowed it down to the following four couples:

1. Rachel & Finn
2. Kurt & Blaine
3. Quinn & Puck
4. Brittany & Santanta

After carefully calculating your votes, we are proud to officially announce the couple you the fans selected as your all-time favorite Glee couple: Brittany & Santana!

Brittana (or Santittany) fans accounted for more than 50% of the total votes, while Kurt and Blaine finished close behind with a shade over 41%. Early season couples Rachel and Finn as well as Quinn and Puck finished third and fourth respectively, only receiving a combined 4% of total votes.

It was a very brief segment. They showed a picture of her boobs from last summer, and one from last week, and they were talking about how much more ample they were now.

It amazes me how many people have turned on Blaine. My sisters used to wonder why I disliked him so much, and now they get it. After the trio episode, my sister said to me, "You're right. Blaine is really annoying."

By the time this show ends, the only people watching will be Darren's family and Ryan.

when the rest of her body shrinks drastically but her boobs stay the same (because silicons are very stable) they will look bigger in relation to the rest of her body. she is way too skinny now.

I've read comments on Tubmlr that the low ratings of 100 "prove" that the Originals don't matter for the GA now and that NY will do as badly as McKinley did.

Actually I agree that whatever the show does now is too little too late as far as ratings. You don't throw a bucket of water after a barn has been burning overnight and expect to somehow save the structure.

I think changing course by the first big break in Season 4 would have been the last legit shot to maintain the audience. But FOX dropped the ball.

What is done is done. FOX cut off the festering corpse that was McKinley and if the show focuses on the Original characters for the last 22 or 31 episode left, so be it.

^ i agree. too little too late and nothing matters anymore. but for us die hard fans it may matter a bit: instead of getting 2% of screentime in which kurt shared w/ rachel and others in NY, now we may get 10% of him, and that's a huge improvement. well at least i hope that's the case.

Song wise we can already see the difference so I'm not complaining.

Actually episodes 5.07, 5.08, 5.09 raised Kurt's profile as far as singing. I hope it continues as a trend.
