Q&A with Glee star Chris Colfer, who talks Julie Andrews, bad hair days and eating sushi with the Queen

The all-singing, all-dancing star tells us about finding refuge from his star status by writing fairy tales for children, and who made him the most starstruck on the set of Glee.

Could you tell us about your second children’s fiction book, The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns?
I’m not sure why I decided to write children’s books – it was just something I wanted to do.
Harry Potter was the first time I felt excited about reading, and I used to spend hours thinking about my own stories. They gave me an escape, they gave me friends and different worlds to think about.

How do you make time to write with your busy schedule?
I never know if I’m going to be filming or shooting or on a world tour. I wrote some of this book backstage at the O2 arena [while performing in the Glee Live show]. I just take it chapter by chapter, vomiting what I’m thinking on to the page.

Have you ever been starstruck on the Glee set?
It’s lessened over time because when you have these people – Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker [all of whom have guest starred in the show] – on set with the regular cast [Chris’s Glee co-star Cory Monteith has tragically passed away since this interview] and talk to them, you realise that everyone is human. But I’ve been trying to campaign for Julie Andrews to play my grandmother and I know I’d be starstruck with her.

What would your dream dinner party involve?
Sushi. Every other restaurant in LA is a sushi place – you can eat your face off and never get a stomach ache. And I’d invite the Queen, as it would be the only way I’d get to meet her. I love everything about the royals: I met Princess Beatrice once and talked her ear off for an hour.

What is your earliest memory?
I claim to remember birth, even though I’m always told it’s impossible. And I remember being in a stage adaptation of Jane Eyre when I was a child, playing Jane’s abusive cousin St John, but the girl playing Jane was a foot taller than me, so I was this tiny kid beating up this huge girl.

What do you see when you look in the mirror?
I hate mirrors; every time I look in one I see things that could be improved. If I could give my younger self any advice it would be: ‘Take a deep breath, the world is not ending – and do something with your hair.’ I had the same haircut from when I was a toddler all the way through high school, it was this weird side-parting. I didn’t like change.

That's truth, at least for me it is (once I ate 30 pieces of sushi by myself and I was fine). And if Chris ever gets his dream, I see them eating sushi in a fancy restaurant, because there's nowhere else I see the Queen having a dinner.

And as regards the last question about the mirrors, I had thought before that Chris might be a perfectionist, but this time it gives me the impression that is a strong characteristic he has.

Until the 'is expecting a baby' it could have been reasonable, but not less shocking, if you tell me he got a surrogate mother, but the 'unnamed girlfriend' is... When Chris came out as straight?
