Re: Movies reviews by yourself
RIP, Mickey Rooney.
Jesus. All of my favorites are dying. Eleanor Parker as well, shortly before this past Christmas. One of the few old time favorites I have left (Diana Serra Cary) is 95 years old. When she goes, she will be one of the last living links to the silent era of American cinema to pass away. (and yes, Mickey Rooney was also a link but he was much more well known for his performances in the talkies).

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
A film I recently saw and loved was August: Osage County. It's a southern gothic, dysfunctional family movie. I LOOOOVE dysfunctional family movies. The only thing I didn't like about it was Julia Roberts....either she overacted her role or I just found her character to be so awful that I couldn't stand her on my screen. Neal Phillips....oops....I mean Dermot Mulroney played a sleazy scumbag in this movie. He always plays that role. He just has that look/feel about him, I guess.
I saw The Way, Way Back a few months ago. Just a solid, warm coming of age movie. Lovely. neuter
Also, a movie that I saw on TV a few months ago that really stayed with me was a quirky indie called "Thumbsucker". It's about a teen boy in high school who is a loser and who sucks his thumb. Eventually, he finds confidence in a HS debate team and begins winning awards and the respect of his peers, thus allowing the oral fixation that he has to stop. He even beings experimenting sexually for the first time. Another coming of age tale that has echoes of SBL, in my opinion. I can so see Chris playing a role like this.

Introducing the funniest and fun Marvel movie since 'The Avengers':
Guardians of the Galaxy
The raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper is great, but the movie's most moving and tender moments are owned by the large tree-creature voiced by Vin Diesel. What made it even more amazing is that Vin Diesel's character has a vocabulary limited to 3 words for most of the movie.
And here's a cute scene at the end of the movie that had put a silly smile on my face. (spoilers though... sort of)

^Awwww...yes, Groot stole my heart. I really enjoyed this movie for the comedic elements and the soundtrack, and how it sometimes poked fun at superheroes.

^ Apparently the movie soundtrack is such a huge hit that it managed to bump off Frozen to take the No.1 position on the Billboard 200 chart. Who would've thought that a mix of 70's songs can be made so popular through a movie?

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
Just saw the last Hobbit. It was kind of bittersweet, the experience and the movie. Also, if the last one belonged to Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, acting wise, this one is all about Richard Armitage. He was just superb. This movie is the reason he was cast. There is a particular scene when the dragon illness is at it's height that he repeats word for word part of speech that Smaug uttered in DoS and he almost sounded like him. Not as satisfing ending as LotR:RotK gives you but a good enough end all the same.
I only wished that the desolation of Smaug and White Council vs. Sauron and the 9 wraith kings scenes had lasted a bit longer and weren't smack at the start of the movie.

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
Sooo looking forward to the movie, it doesn't start here in the States until Thursday.
It's so funny, because for me it's hard to fathom the LOR and Hobbit movies without the extended scenes that eventually come out in the DVD/Blu Ray editions. The theatrical versions are almost like a rough cut in hindsight.
Hopefully with the inevitable 30-40 additional minutes extended version comes out, they will flesh out those scenes. Here in the States there has been little pushing of Smaug, which surprises me since the dragon was the cliff hanger of the second movie.I only wished that the desolation of Smaug and White Council vs. Sauron and the 9 wraith kings scenes had lasted a bit longer and weren't smack at the start of the movie.

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
well, looking how SMALL the part Smaug plays in the 3rd one, it's no wonder the little or no promo for him.
the film has been in the cinemas here since last Thursday if i'm not mistaken. i guess we do get movies before USA sometimes. but only really big hits. other stuff can be from a few weeks to even a few months after the USA premier. i would assume that it has something to do with low ticket sales so they have to wait to see the viability of the movie before playing it here. another movie i may go see starts on the 18th of december, Exodus : Gods and Kings. That is already out in US if i'm not mistaken.
as for the extended stuff, i agree. i have all 5 movies on my PC in 720p extended versions and when this one comes out i will do a full Tolkien marathon. i recently saw DoS and honestly i bearably remember any new scenes, as opposed to part one where is very notocable, expecially the Rivendale section.

that's not richard/thorin in the picture. that's Dean/Fili right?
A big Armitage fan here. i wish he gets more good roles in the future. i am looking forward to the last hobbit but like you i have to wait til tomorrow or day after tomorrow. actually i have to help my sons move later this week so i may end up waiting til next monday or something. i am going to see the IMAX 3D high frame rate thing. this is something i can't get on my home TV.

On a more relevant note, I cannot wait to see the last instalment of The Hobbit. It's going to be so emotional for me when this ends. The LOTR films helped me distress after some brutal exams and turned me into an unrepentant nerd for the fantasy genre. It's hard to say goodbye to Middle Earth on the big screen for now.

Lol on my photo.
This is how bad I am, I went to a theatre and paid good money to see "Into the Storm" .
Apparently the movie is going great in the box office.
Glad to hear all the positive reviews on Richard. Since "North and South" I'm in love...

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
geez, I finally got to see the last Hobbit yesterday. There are only 2 theaters that offer IMAX 3D high frame rate in NYC, and only one has reserved seating. that one requires over an hour of commute one way each by foot and subway rides, that's why it was so hard for me to take time off to see it. finally on xmas day i decided to give myself a perfect "gift". so i went to see a movie about fire breathing and head chopping and people left and right dying in the midst of hi-fi acrobatics - perfectly eye candy for the holiday that's all about shopping and material indulgence in the name of the birth of a holly man!
I personally think the movie is hte best of the three. the pace is good, and it's very entertaining. the visual is stunning although i am not a big fan of nearly-monochromatic coloring in general. the only thing i don't like is Evengeline Lily's character saying "it hurts so much" at the end. it felt weird. i hope they add an hour of material to the extended version, because there seems to be a lot "missing" about the conclusion of the battle.
i have extended versions of all the middle earth movies except this one (but will have it when it comes out), because i love the extra materials, especially the chapters on world building and set design. these extra materials alone are worth every penny.
with hind sight, i must say i am glad PJ made a huge "epic" series out of this little book. i watched the cartoon version of the hobbit and thought it was faithful to the book and like the book, very "child-ish" in its story telling, which is good for children, but extremely boring for adults. I think jackson did his best w/ the book material. it's also very consistent in tone and style with the LOTR movie trilogy. i only wish they made the LOTR later so they can have high frame rate and better CGI. when i go back to LOTR, it looks so last century. technology definitely has improved a great deal since then, and all for the better.
I am a big fan of high frame rate. my son disagrees but i hate motion blur during fast action sequences. It makes the sequence look fake and gives me headaches and dizziness. HFR got rid of these problems for me. i honestly don't understand the negativity toward this technology. maybe my eye/brain nerve systems are wired different from these critics?
personally i wish i can go back to see it one more time but it requires another 5 hours including commuting time and i am not sure i can find this time before it's taken off from the theater soon. i also need subtitles. too bad no subtitles in movie theater.

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
i still think DoS is the best of the three, but i would need the full extended version for a final decision.
i don't enjoy 3D at all - tend to get headaches from it not to mention that i HATE how much darker the film is because of the dark glassless and haven't seen it in that 48 high rate so i can't comment on that.

Re: Movies reviews by yourself
regular 3D is horrible. gives me headache too everytime. the only one i love is in a huge IMAX theater, where the screen fills up my whole field of vision. i won't see a 3D movie unless it's IMAX. that's why i had to travel far to see it. there are lots of theaters near me and all of them play Hobbit in regular 3D and 2D and i won't even bother w them.
these movies are meant to be watched together as a complete story. it's best to spend a whole lazy day curled up w your fluffiest animals (and humans, if they are fluffy too), surrounded by food and drinks, watch hte whole trilogy in one setting. it's easier said than done though. i did that w/ LOTR and felt sick afterwards.

Just saw 'The Imitation Game' and I recommend seeing it. The movie is very well done and Benedict Cumberbatch gives a lovely performance as Alan Turing. Based on history - this is the story of the man that helped crack the Nazi 'Enigma' code to win WWII, but also the computer I'm typing on was his brainchild. He envisioned a machine that could solve problems faster than a human brain and was able to create the first computer.

^ This is one of the movies that I'm interested in watching. Since becoming a Sherlock fan, I haven't been able to resist watching anything with Benedict Cumberbatch in it.
I have yet to watch the 3rd Hobbit movie, and I'm quite keen on 'Into the Woods' as well. So far, I've only managed to find the time and opportunity to watch Disney's latest offering-- 'Big Hero 6'. It's more boy-orientated (featuring superheroes and fighting robots), and it doesn't have any princesses or showtunes; but it's still a cartoon with plenty of heart, with its main selling point being the friendship between a huggable robot and a boy genius.

i saw avengers : age of ultron today.
the movie was great but i swear to god am never again watching anything in 3d. this is the 4th or 5th movie and each experience was the same, no visible 3d and always so effing dark.
and i wasn't a huge fan of any of the avengers, liked them all, but non of them more then the other. not any more.
new fave - The Vision
anyway, without going into spoilers, while this is an ensemble movie, the characters that get more screentime are hawkeye and bruce banner/black widow. and i kind of liked the change. i mean the rest all have stand alone movies. ultron in incredible, very funny yet intimidating (like tony stark, but with no soul and a twisted sense of world peace). the vision is the absolute scene stiller. while this quicksilver was ok but not better then in x men-dofp, i liked the scarlet witch much more.
