Insider Interview
Chris Colfer Opens Up About “The Break-Up”
No matter which ‘ship you sail on, Glee’s gail-force break-up episode left everyone’s hearts bruised, battered and gasping for air.
Finchel is no more, Brittana is dunzo and Wemma’s future is uncertain. But Klaine took the biggest hit of all after Blaine admitted to cheating on Kurt and the landmark gay couple was left in pieces.
To help make sense of it all, TheInsider.com sat down with Chris Colfer for an exclusive post-mortem on the episode, and found out that while the skies are cloudy now, the sun is right around the corner.
TheInsider.com: What was your first reaction to finding out Kurt and Blaine were breaking up?
Chris Colfer: Initially I was excited. I think they’re the first Glee couple who have yet to separate. I was looking forward to having a little drama between them and thought it’d be nice not being the ugly half of a power couple for a while. But I was thinking as an actor and forgot about the fans, now I’m just terrified of how they’ll react. They love their Klaine.
Insider.com: Yeah, I am a little worried for their collective sanity right about now.
Chris: You know, it’s really quite incredible how much love and support these characters have, because ten years ago it might have been a different story. With that said, let me tell you I have been dreading this moment since that love made itself known. Every time something or someone comes between these characters there are riots and looting in the streets. I’m not looking forward to the episode for that reason alone. I may have to go into hiding. I just hope this wasn’t what the Mayans predicted.
Insider.com: What would you like to say to the heart-broken Klaine fans?
Chris: The most important thing I would say, with all seriousness, is to please remember that this is just a television show and Darren [Criss] and I are actors. My Twitter feed is full of angry people saying they’ve been emotionally distraught for weeks and they’re going to harm themselves if they break up. I know these are mostly exaggerations, but it’s still concerning. A TV show is never worth any of that.
Insider.com: What did you like about “how” the writers broke Kurt and Blaine up?
Chris: I thought it was very realistic. People grow up and grow apart. You get busy and lose contact with people you love over time, not intentionally, it’s just how life is sometimes. It also gives the story so many places to go now.
Insider.com: What excites you about Kurt being single in NYC?
Chris: I’m just really excited to see what the future holds for him in general. Whether that means dating one person or a few over the course of the season, I just want to see him live and be his own person. He had a really bad year last season so it’s been nice to see him spread his wings.
Insider.com: There were two major musical moments in The Break-Up. First, what was it like filming that incredibly emotional Don’t Speak on the streets of New York?
Chris: It’s always an adventure filming in New York City. We had a crowd of people show up to watch it, so it felt like we were doing theater. We were in a park downtown and a homeless woman yelled at us to get out of her house. I definitely broke character in that take.
Insider.com: To close the episode, the entire cast reunited on The McKinley stage for the first time this season to perform The Scientist – what was it like all being back together?
Chris: It felt very familiar. In reality, Kurt and Rachel’s apartment is only a few yards away from the choir room at Paramount studios. We see everybody everyday. It wasn’t as nostalgic as it is on the screen.
Insider.com: Do Kurt and Rachel’s breakups separate the New York and McKinley characters even more?
Chris: I wouldn’t say it separates them but it certainly makes going home more difficult, but they’ve relatively stayed in touch with their friends at McKinley so far.
Insider.com: What’s next for Kurt? What are you excited for the fans to see in the coming episodes?
Chris: Your guess is as good as mine. I know Sarah Jessica Parker is coming back soon, which I’m excited about. I really hope we get to explore the fashion world through Kurt’s eyes. I think that’d be a lot of fun to see and there’s so much we could do with it. But he may give it all up for a second chance at NYADA. I’m good with either, I miss performing and hovering over Whoopi Goldberg.

He always will be.
It shows he still cares about this character.
I am hoping that Klaine is split for the rest of the season so Kurt can explore by dating.
Chris was right about Kurt being seen as the ugly one in the relationship (all thanks to the writers).
It is good they haven't gone there with Kurt anymore.
And we are getting SJP back.
I don't think with these next three episodes we will see Kurt dating, but who knows. They don't seem to release any spoilers about Kurt until it is closer to the air date, or a week before. Maybe that is what they will do again, they seem to really careful with Kurt's story of late. That is what is seems to me anyway.
I don't think they liked the Kurtsie backlash after "Goodbye"

Dammit, I really hate RIB for doing that to Kurt and Chris.Chris Colfer: Initially I was excited. I think they’re the first Glee couple who have yet to separate. I'm glad Chris is so open and honest in these interviews.
He is the best Kurtsie ever.

Re: Insider Interview
That line saying that It would be nice for him to not be the "ugly" side of a power couple for a while it what makes some Klainers feel upset and sorry to those people (actually I don't feel that lol) but is what Chris feels about it and personally I appreciate he's being so honest, because when you're honest, not everybody gonna like that. In addition, it seems to me that he's also sending a message to RIB, that he's not totally comfortable with what happened and/or is happening with Kurt.
Yep,he's a kurtsie too.

Sorry for what was written here before
I'm still to see how this works
And clearly what was written did not belong here
For this topic I have to say that:
Ryan, writers and producers are stupid for not understanding this

This was a really great interview but I hate that he has been made to feel like the ugly half of a power couple. He is not ugly anything.

Re: Insider Interview
I've seen disagreement over what Chris meant by 'ugly'. Some people think he means in a physical way because the writers insist on pretending that Kurt is less attractive than Blaine (something I cannot fathom), and others think that he means it in the sense that Kurt causes most of the problems in the relationship- texting Chandler, moving to NY, etc. I don't agree with that, but it's definitely true that he's been portrayed as the bad guy in a lot of their conflicts.

It's the Blaine stans that like to think that Kurt is the bad guy and Blaine is perfect and that Kurt isn't good enough for him.
I hated how they wrote Kurt as unattractive last season, no wonder Chris was criticising his looks. They should have known how insecure Chris can be on that issue. That was just plain cruel and unnecessary. This still gets me anger because the Blaine stans fed from it and pushed it relentlessly everywhere on the internet, no wonder poor Chris was believing it.
I do believe he still doubts his appearance, which again is really sad as he is a gorgeous sexy young man.

Re: Insider Interview
At first when he said he was the "ugly" side in Klaine, I didn't take it as he were talking about physical appearance, but then I went to tumblr and I realized that some people understood it in that way. So I'm anazlizing that line again and sadly is true, as you have pointed Kurt is written/portayed as he were the less atractive between he and Blaine, when all of us we know that he's as or I'd say more handsome than him.
Re: Insider Interview
He could have meant anything, maybe he was just joking in his self-deprecating way, he could have meant RIB portraying him as the uglier one or that the fans (Blainers) write him that...That he meant being the bad guy didn't occur to me, but everything is possible.

Re: Insider Interview
Chris 'ugly half of a power couple' line had upset me so much that I sent out my first tweet to him, arguing that he's beautiful.
Now I feel like a creepy person...
Yes, it could be self-deprecating humour on Chris's part, but I find that his 'jokes' tend to hold some truth in them. He wouldn't consider himself (or Kurt) the ugly half of Klaine if there hadn't been good reason to feel this way. It could be the media, tweets from annoying Kurt haters, or the vibes he gets on the script writing level on Glee.
I would very much rather Chris remains honest when he answers questions about Glee/Klaine, as opposed to trying to placate fans by portraying himself as a die-hard supporter of a fictional ship (like what Lea does with Finchel). I appreciate his honesty in this interview.

i love chris' honesty. I don't like pandering. but regarding the bolded, at least Lea sails on teh ship that she herself ships - I mean, this girl is dating her co-star, so her is genuinely attracted to Cory.

Re: Insider Interview
I would really like to know what Chris really thinks when he speaks privately to close friends/family. How he feels about the Glee and Kurt future. Of course we will never know, I am sure.
Does any one else ever wonder what Chris is doing day by day or even hour by hour? I was working today and I just began to wonder what Chris might have been up to at that moment.

Lol Sometimes I wonder what people like Chris does everyday, if his life is normal like ours, for instance if he lays down on bed and watch tv on Sunday night. Yeah is kinda weird.
And if we want to know what he say to his family and friends, we have to posses Brian's body.

Well, I am just glad to know that I am not alone. So.. wonder what he is doing tonight? and why were we not invited? he isn't even tweeting that I know of. If filming glee is on a break wonder what his next projects are.
Yes I wonder if there is ever just sit down and watch tv. He lives alone, I assume, I bet that he often craves solitude and just shuts the world out some of the time.

Re: Insider Interview
Me too! I wonder that all the time and I wish I was there with him doing whatever he's doing. I love everything about him and would be so happy to be part of his life and be his friend. I noticed though that we don't have much in common in our tastes. For example I really don't like the same kind of TV shows, movies and books that he likes. But I would totally go see a show or movie that I don't like with him just to be around him and make him happy and see his reactions to it. THAT would be my entertainment, not the actual show. lol
Aaaaaand.....I feel pathetic lol
