It's the same for me.MoviesAreLife wrote:Ugh! Me too! It sucks so much! I feel trapped in my own head. Most of us switch like that, right? It just depends.
Yes, that's right that certain performers can be shy/quiet offstage and charismatic performers onstage. A good example of this is Michael Jackson. Shy, soft spoken, couldn't look you in the eye, almost asexual offstage. But when he was in performance mode...wow, he was a beast.
And then there's people who are shy in almost every circumanstances like me... :-D I could not be on any stage even if I was talented :-)

What’s the quote from TLOS2 you’re most proud of?
Mrs. Peters has some good quotes. Because I really always use Mrs. Peters as kind of a character just to kind of vent. And one of the lines that Mrs. Peters said in the book is…

Re: CC360, Live Chat - 2013/08/11
You described it perfectly. I was an anti-social/hyper-introvert/super-shy and self-concious teenager, but my French teacher encouraged me to do theater with her and gave me the main role. The sensation you have when you're on stage is incredible, and putting a "mask" as you play someone else is what allows you to overcome you're shyness. As long as people don't see "you", it's OK to perform.AnneNeville wrote:1. When they are playing a character they are not themselves. It's a creative act. The character they play is often quite distinct from their personality (the actor I'm thinking of played a high-energy-hearthrob Elvis-type, but after the show he'd barely have the energy to look you in the eye).MoviesAreLife wrote:That's amazing! I am REALLY shy in real life, even now in college. I still cannot stand talking in front of a class...I couldn't imagine having to sing in front of anyone too! Well, he was a performing arts kid and a speech and debate champion....but maybe outside of that, he was shy?
2. They are often quite exhausted after the show and don't have a lot of energy to spare to hob-nob or socialize (or sign autographs). In a sense, all of their public appearances are also performances. Not dishonest--but they take a certain amount of work. It's not energizing.
3. They keep their distance from fans and require a lot of quiet time inside their heads. They can be quite hard to read because they have to put up protective walls when they are not performing (that includes public appearances--those are a kind of performance, too).
It's possible to love performance and get a thrill out of creating something--even in front of an audience. But that something you created is most definitely NOT YOU. It's part of you, but it's bigger than you. It's like a mask. Take the mask off . . . and it's just shy/introverted normal you again.
I never have had the desire to perform--to play at being another person--but I think for some it is cathartic to be able to take on another identity. That doesn't make them an extrovert or not shy. It also doesn't mean that the public performance part is easy (lots of performers get stage fright). It just looks that way.
I think that the shy/introverted performers are much less common, but then again . . . introverts are much less common than extroverts to begin with--so is it surprising?
That said, I don't know if Chris would consider himself shy or an introvert. I haven't paid close enough attention. But it is possible to be both--and to be an absolutely electrifying performer. It can be a little unnerving, to tell the truth, to work with a performer like that, because the role takes so much energy that you can see them sag at the end of the night.
But acting makes them happy.
I seem to recall that Stanislavsky himself had terrible stage fright. I think it ended his career on stage.

^I'm shy and introvert too. I have an alternative persona I can hide behind when Im performing: then I'm "The well-trained Singer, with a diploma to prove it", not just awkward, self-doubting and always-put-down-by-others-because-I-dared-to-think-I-could-sing-well little me.
It's very cathartic.
(and kinda twisted, lol)
If there was a theme song for TLOS, what would it be?

Some of the things you have said have been what Chris has said about himself, as well as others that have said about him.AnneNeville wrote:1. I seem to recall that Stanislavsky himself had terrible stage fright. I think it ended his career on stage.
During the Glee Live rehearsals he said he would go over to the side and just sit quietly and think.
Some call him reserved. He is still awkward but he can certainly grab an audience.
He is a lot more forward in his speaking now and his opinions. He is charismatic, that a lot of fans say after meeting him.
The fact he has a maturity that not many his age in Hollywood have.
I would not call him and extrovert as he doesn't crave attention. But then I wouldn't call him a complete introvert, though I think he has more of those qualities from my interpretation and from how others have spoken about him.

This is a really great picture: he is natural there, no "forced" smile, or "pose" smile, just him relaxing with Brian. Just lovely.Glorfindel wrote:

It would have been awesome if Oprah were there, but sadly she's a busy woman. Someday Chris.
And now we're talking about if Chris is more introvert or extrovert, I think he's someone who is able to be both, but it depends on the cirscumstances. I don't know why I see him being more laid back when he's with his inner circle, instead of doing ridiculous stuff in front of everybody. And if he ever does, is because he's in character or doing a performance like Single Ladies for instance.
Re: CC360, Live Chat - 2013/08/11
He seems to look older again. Or is it just me? (Not in a bad way--but I think he may have crossed the line over the summer from "would have been able to play a high school student" to "nope!").

Re: CC360, Live Chat - 2013/08/11
Honestly, I don't think you can be both. You can put on a good show of being outgoing and be very charismatic as an introvert (I'm an introvert, and when I speak in public I am very charismatic, and my students have told me so). You can only know whether someone is an introvert or extrovert by finding out if they feel energized by interacting with people (large numbers and/or strangers), or whether they feel energized by having some quiet time in their heads or in small groups of people they know.brisallie wrote:It would have been awesome if Oprah were there, but sadly she's a busy woman. Re: CC360, Live Chat - 2013/08/11
@AnneNeville, after reading what you said, even though I love knowing new people, by other side I prefer if I have the chance to meet them in a small place, because sometimes I don't know what to talk. So probably I'm introvert, though a friend have told me she doesn't see me like that.
Re: CC360, Live Chat - 2013/08/11
I think he could be a mixture of both. There is a performance switch that he uses for work and promotional events, as well as for certain public activities. But when that switch is turned off...he's more reserved?

It's really minutae, but in such a case a person is an introvert who is good at performing. ;-) Or, an extrovert who has chosen for personal reasons to put up strong boundaries. But I don't think you are both at once. Introvert/Extrovert is a continuum, I suppose . . . you can be more or less extreme . . .MoviesAreLife wrote:I think he could be a mixture of both. Anyway, unless someone is going to pop up here and confess to knowing Chris personally, or being Chris himself, and shares with us which he explicitly considers himself to be, we will never know. ;-)
