Yay, Chris brought up that Sam took care of his younger brother and sister! Before Sam became as dumb as Brittany. rooots

This episode is showing so much continuity, wow, not used to that on Glee anymore.

I'm not even going to pretend to be unbiased here. Chris did an absolutely bang up job with this script.

Painting Maggie as a terrible, neglectful mother is not an easy thing to do. But this is what a good writer does - give characters layers. No one is one dimensional here.

And way to go Rachel... you get to pose with the dog and prevented it from getting a forever home.

The problem is that this is how Rachel really is when viewed from outside the ND bubble - self-serving and ambitious to the point that she would take a crowbar to the knee of her best friend if she thought it would get her something that she wanted.

I also think this episodes Sam seems more like the S2 Sam that lots of people liked. Love how he shouts at the olders, does he believe all of them are almost deaf?

On a side note, I'm quite emotional this episode, don't know why.

Re: 5x19 "Old Dog, New Tricks" Watch & Discussion thread

Post  Ranwing on 5/6/2014, 10:21 pm

An absolutely masterful job, Chris. Excellent work. I was smiling and crying at the same time.

I'll start off with the easy stuff - Rachel is very difficult to like when her ambition gets the better of her. She runs roughshod over everything and every one around her to advance her interests. Kurt was dead right to call her out for pushing him away when she didn't have a use for him to be her personal cheerleader (now that Santana is filling that role) and using the charity for her own benefit and not because she's actually interested in doing good. But she isn't totally stupid and when pushed, her better nature can come out. I don't expect it to last because the Glee writers tend to write Rachel as a caricature and not a person.

The lack of any focus on Blaine was refreshing. Of course he had to name drop just so Kurt would know what a huge sacrifice Blaine was making to see him perform.

I really liked everything with Sam and Mercedes. We had season 2 Sam back! With a brain and everything. And to have a couple really talk about what's going on in their relationship and come to agreements together... not something that we see too often.

I loved Maggie and all the residents of the senior home. As I said earlier, this struck a big nerve with me and I could understand the complex family dynamics. Parents aren't always perfect and sometimes it's hard for grown children to let go of the past. I give credit for Chris not shying away from giving sweet Maggie some serious flaws (ambition getting in the way of her family) while still not erasing the fact that she is a old lady who really doesn't have anything else in her life. Bringing Maggie and Clara back together really had me sniffling.

And Kurt... his feelings are more than understandable. Besides feeling like the one failure in their group because he hasn't immediately shot to stardom or given a major boost to his career, he's also feeling left behind because everyone is so busy with their own lives that they're just ignoring him. He was right to call out Rachel for her selfishness and I'm sad that it took Chris writing the episode for Kurt to finally get a voice. And I appreciated the fact that he was doing the show at the retirement home not for his own benefit, but for the residents who didn't have a whole lot to keep their spirits up. It was generous in a way that we haven't seen done on Glee before. Every other performance is for their own advancement and not because they want to give to others. This won't do anything to advance Kurt's career (unless on of these old fold has some friends still in the business), but it renewed his love of performing and he could share it with those who really needed it. And I love how Kurt knew who Maggie was as soon as she said her name - the heck with Rachel being the Broadway baby... Kurt knows everything.

I know that I'm going to babble more about this ep because it was so fantastic but I'll leave it for now on this note... this is the first time in ages when I've watched an episode of Glee where I wasn't left angry or disappointed when it was over. Chris did everyone justice and I hope that this will open up more doors for him professionally.

Damn you, Chris. I cried so many times during that episode. Memory, when Kurt went to talk to Maggie's daughter, when he told Maggie that they could be each other's family all had me in tears. Hell, I even cried when Sam gave away the dog at the end.
