I'm a little bummed that this could affect the box office prospects of the movie, but I'm thrilled that many more people will be able to watch it. That way it could build a cult status over time and he will still be a popular movie star, because even if people didn't see it in the theaters they still saw it somewhere, so the film and Chris will become well known and that should help his future prospects as a film writer and actor Smile.

An article on SBL being picked up for distribution:

Chris Colfer’s movie starring Chris Colfer as kinda-Chris-Colfer picked up for 2012 release

by Tasha Robinson June 19, 2012

Given that Glee’s Chris Colfer has been successfully expanding into every medium he can reach, from children’s books to live performances to MTV movie parodies to a Disney pilot, it’s no particular surprise that his debut film, Struck By Lightning—an indie he scripted and starred in—has been picked up for distribution. At this rate, scientists studying the Chris Colfer phenomenon estimate that by the year 2017, the pop-culture universe will be comprised of roughly 87 percent Chris Colfer.

Struck By Lightning premièred in April 2012 at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, and now Tribeca Films has acquired the film’s U.S. release rights, which feels a little like Dick Cheney heading that vice-presidential search committee that eventually decided he was the best candidate for vice president. Tribeca has announced plans for a “late 2012 theatrical release day,” but is planning to simultaneously distribute it via Video On Demand through Amazon, iTunes, and other services.

Struck By Lightning stars Colfer in a role that feels like equal parts his Glee character, Kurt Hummel, and unadulterated Chris Colfer: He plays a preposterously ambitious, precocious high-schooler engaged in every possible non-physical extracurricular activity, and obsessed with getting into Northwestern University and becoming a world-renowned journalist and writer. Not incidentally, he also wants to get away from his dead-end small town, where the popular kids scorn him. Once he finds out he needs even more activities on his transcript to impress Northwestern, he launches a literary journal, and he and outcast ally Rebel Wilson blackmails those popular kids into submitting pieces. All of which would make Struck By Lightning something of a playful, Heathers-esque dark comedy, except that it has a heavy melodrama side, via the alcoholic, depressive mother (Allison Janney) who wants to hold Colfer back, the estranged father (Dermot Mulroney) who’s about to officially dump Janney so he can marry his pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks), and the Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother who seemingly exists solely to make Colfer even broodier. It’s further complicated by the fact that Colfer dies in the film’s first scene, and the rest of his story is told in flashback. (Care to guess how he dies? The title might just be a clue.)

Struck By Lightning makes an interesting pair with the other film Tribeca Films picked up for release after it won Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Festival: War Witch, a powerful, painful drama about a young African girl impressed into service by a militia leader who thinks she has magical powers. War Witch is slated for a 2013 release; as of press time, there was no word available on why Chris Colfer didn’t star in that film, too.

Another one:

Tribeca Film Acquires ‘Struck By Lightning’ With ‘Glee’s Chris Colfer
By MIKE FLEMING | Tuesday June 19, 2012 @ 10:00am EDT

Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to “Glee” star Chris Colfer’s film debut, the high school comedy Struck By Lightning. In addition to starring in the movie, Colfer also wrote the screenplay for the film, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and was met with a standing ovation. Directed with awareness and exuberance by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), the highly anticipated film also stars Allison Janney, Polly Bergen, Rebel Wilson, Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Hyland and Angela Kinsey.

Tribeca Film plans a late 2012 theatrical release day and date with on-demand platforms where it will be available in 40+ million homes through a variety of video-on-demand offerings, in addition to iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Xbox and Samsung Media Hub.

High school senior Carson Phillips (Chris Colfer) was destined for bigger things than his close-minded small town could ever offer. He was on a path to greatness, but destiny had a different plan when he was suddenly killed by a bolt of lightning in his school parking lot.

Demonstrating that life is what happens while you’re busy planning your future, Carson recounts the last few weeks of his life via witty, insightful flashbacks, including a blackmail scheme targeting the popular kids in school that he concocts with his best friend (Rebel Wilson, Bridesmaids), and a home life that includes a mother (Allison Janney, Juno, “The West Wing”) who’s more interested in the bottle than her son’s future and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney, My Best Friend’s Wedding) who suddenly appears with a pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men”).

“Showcasing his remarkable talents not only as an actor but as a writer and storyteller, Chris Colfer infuses this reinvention of the high school comic-drama with such spirit and joy that he almost makes us fondly nostalgic,” said Geoff Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. “Rousing, fresh, superbly acted by a strong ensemble, and wonderfully directed by Brian Dannelly, we are delighted to be partnering with Chris and his fellow filmmakers to share this new take on a classic genre for a new generation.”

Colfer added, “I’m so thrilled to be partnering with a company as passionate about this film as we are.”

“I was hoping Struck by Lightning would end up somewhere like Tribeca Film, because I watch films all the time on demand,” said Brian Dannelly. “It’s exciting that an independent film like ours can now be seen by so many people—instantly—at the same time the film is premiering in theaters.”

Struck By Lightning is a co-production between Permut Presentations and Camellia Entertainment in association with Inphenate and Evil Media Empire. It is produced by David Permut, Roberto Aguire and Mia Chang. Along with Colfer, the executive producers include Jason Michael Berman, Glenn Rigberg and Lawrence Kopeikin. Co-producers on the project are Monica Aguirre Diez Barroso, Steve Longi, and Mark Moran.

The deal was negotiated for Tribeca Film by Nick Savva, Director of Acquisitions, and on behalf of the filmmakers by Traction Media and ICM Partners.

As expected, Wetpaint is more into the gossip mode:

Chris Colfer’s Struck By Lightning Movie Gets a Release Date!
about 8 hours ago by Beth Douglass

It’s official: Chris Colfer’s (Kurt) film Struck By Lightning is headed to theaters, and you’ll likely be able to watch it sometime later this year.

Struck By Lightning, an independent movie Chris both wrote and starred in, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, and now Deadline is reporting that the U.S. rights for the movie have been acquired by Tribeca Film.

The studio plans to release the film in theatres in late 2012, while simultaneously making it available on-demand and through platforms like iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Xbox and Samsung Media Hub.

“I’m so thrilled to be partnering with a company as passionate about this film as we are,” Chris says.

Other familiar faces in the movie include Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, Bridesmaids’ Rebel Wilson, Allison Janney, and Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland.

Congrats to everyone on the pickup! We’ve been dying to see this film ever since the first photos emerged during filming last summer, so we’re thrilled to finally get the chance to watch it on the big screen in just a few months.

No, seriously. Are tickets available yet? We want to pre-order them ASAP.

Perez Hilton's bits about SBL getting a distributor:
----------------------------------------------

Chris Colfer's Struck By Lightning Gets Simultaneous Theatrical And OnDemand Release Date Through Tribeca Films!

You go, Chris Co! You go!!

Given the fact that it received a standing ovation after its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, we're not too surprised!

Chris Colfer's film debut - as an actor AND screenwriter - Struck By Lightning has been acquired by Tribeca Film for distribution, and plans to release the coming-of-age comedy to theaters in late 2012, as well as a simultaneous release via OnDemand, iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Xbox, and Samsung Media Hub!

Amazing!

Such a fantastic way for Glee and film fans alike to see this, especially when they wouldn't have been able to otherwise (if it was only debuting to a limited theatrical release)!

We couldn't be MORE thrilled for Chris, and everyone else involved!

Congrats, congrats!

We cannot WAIT to see this movie! How about U??
