pre screening

Post  fantastica on 2/29/2012, 2:56 am

Q&A form Tumblr: source

About how many people went to the screening?
Asked by manilai

You know the big theaters with stadium seating? It was one of those, and the first 5 rows were “regular people” and the rest were reserved for “important people.” I think they were like, movie production/executive people. They all looked really professional.

how was the audience reaction?! from both the ~regular people and the ~professional people? (and yaaaaaaay, i'm glad you loved it!)
Asked by gleemofos

Everyone was so respectful!! I was so happy! There were a few intense moments and the “important” people started applauding Chris! And people politely clapped during the credits. Everyone laughed when appropriate and I doubt I’m the only one who was moved to tears! But I think the audience took the movie in really well and everything went as planned, so to say.

You mean SBL is good, can you give me an example of which level good movie? Asked by wowireallyneedsociallife

Hmm… I don’t really understand your question since we all have different flavors of movies that we like. I think the best i can compare it to, as far as how… Popular it might be? I suppose, I feel like it will be like Juno or 500 Days of Summer. Like, very indie but I feel like its going to be accepted as a really great movie and gain popularity.

Hello, may I please ask, How did the industry professionals react to the film. Did they laugh and cry too? Did they seem positive about the film? What seemed to be the general reaction with them and do you think that Chris' film will manage to get a distributor from this? Thank you so much. Asked by justmadwiththemmall

I think they all loved it! I elaborated more about their reactions in another post, but they clapped at the end and during some more intense scenes and they all seemed to be eager about it!

Thanks, that's what I mean, cause I have fears SBL will be another highschool comedy like Mean Girl male version, there are people already think so even they haven't seen this movie yet.
Asked by wowireallyneedsociallife

Don’t even worry! It was nothing like mean girls! Like, there were the high school cliches (like the cheerleaders and jocks and foreign kids in the trailer) but they were portrayed in such a real way that it wasn’t cliche at all, if that makes sense. Like, the focus was Carson’s journey rather than the cliques.

How did you feel about the adult characters in the film? Did you like the scenes with Carson and his family members?
Asked by quietly-clearly

Oh gosh, Allison Janey (is that her name? Carson’s mom) was outstanding. I don’t feel right giving away character details, but I can say that her performance was so, so raw and real, and her chemistry with Chis Colfer was surreal, I don’t think they could have chosen a better actress to play Carson’s mom.

How was Chris' acting? Was he different from Kurt and did he seem good in comparison with those famous respected names? Asked by smarik229

Oh gosh, Chris’s acting was amazing. He definitely held his own with the more seasoned actors. He was so different from Kurt. I was a little worried at first, because Kurt is such an iconic and associative character. When people see Chris, they think of Kurt. But Carson was so different from Kurt. Everything from his body language to his voice and tone ad facial expressions was so genuinely Carson, that Kurt was no where on my mind. He really did such a good job and really portrayed his diversity as an actor. It was very natural as well, nothing seemed forced or over-acted.

Just got back from the Struck By Lightning screening

all of the acting was on point, the dialogue was witty and it was both more tragic and hilarious then I dared to expect- I hope it gets good distribution because it comes from a very different place then the usual high school movie.

Struck by Lightning was PHENOMENAL!!!!!!

Oh my God. I laughed, I cried, it was just…. The WRITING was so good!!!! And when it ended and the first thing on the screen said “Written by Chris Colfer” I cried harder!!! It was just… Just the best movie I’ve ever seen, and I’m not just saying that!

yes, but that's all we have for now. discount half the frailing if you wish (I would; just so I won't get my expectations up too high).

One fan who was an extra wrote a detailed review (basically "awesome", but dark, and even depressing at times) but had a lot of spoilers so I am not posting it here. just the first and last sentences:
"I just got back from a screening of “Struck by Lightning”. And let me say, from a point of view that is completely, totally, and utterly unbiased (other than the fact that I love Chris Colfer and everything he chooses to be) … the movie was awesome.
... (blah blah blah too spoilery!!!)
At the end of the day, this movie is incredibly relatable and therapeutic for everyone who struggles, or struggled, in high school."

If you have to read it, you can find it on P-F site. It's been pulled off from Tumblr source but alas...

ETA (wednesday): P-F took it off too. thank god!

I can send you the spoilers via PM if you want because I don't think we should publish it here (or if most has no problem with it I can post them on this page - let me know). Although they aren't so much spoiler, it's just a more detailed layout of the film and the impression that the viewer got from it. They really tried not to give anything too spoilery.

Thank you for the consideration in not posting the too detailed review.

Seeing first hand how too many spoilers had spoiled the 'Prom Queen' and 'The First Time' episodes on Glee, I would stay away from any SBL fan reviews that are too spoiler-y for now.

Things may change for me if SBL doesn't get distributed to Australia (No! Such a thing cannot happen! Think happy thoughts, Think happy thoughts, Think happy thoughts).

So, if they're looking for distributors and screening it to 'professional' people, I'm assuming that the final product of the movie is done and now it's only a matter of waiting for the film to get shown in theatres, yes? No more further editing or finishing touches, yes? (I think I've read somewhere that the SBL trailer that was released earlier was not the final, finished product)

Actually I read on tumblr that the movie was not final either (that sound was weird or what), but I don't know if that's true.

The trailer was a finished product, just not an official trailer. It was more to peak the interest for potential distributors and first look for fans. It was good, but there are ways to improve it, always.

As for the movie, the post production may not all be done, but it should be more or less the final cut. It all dependents if the viewers filled a questionnaire after watching it for suggestions. In that case, that may not be the final, final version, and some scenes may be edited. If it wasn't, then it's most likely the final cut, just not fully processed in post production.

I'll most likely have to relay on piracy for the film because the chances of it coming here are slim and that if it's big in the US or worldwide. Maybe a film festival, but even that will only happen if it's well received on international ones or popular at the box office.

Re: Struck by Lightning Main thread

Post  fantastica on 2/29/2012, 11:00 am

I would not recommend posting any spoiler of SBL even in the spoiler thread of this forum right now, as most of us read spoiler thread here. The person who posed it quickly took it off hte web, but it's already out in the wild. I think as Chris fans we all have too much love and respect for him to spoiler his first attempt at making his own feature film. It's a super endeaver for a young man like him and it's almost a miracle he's gone this far. I hope the negotiations for distriburship is in the works.

The film is finished but probably not gone through typical finishing touches like color correction and sound processing that big budget movies usually do.

One more SBL opinion from Tumblr:

Anonymous: "Do you think this movie can give Chris more chances to being cast in big productions and playing straight characters as well? Was he really convincing? (I'm always worried about that part because people always say that he will be typecast forever and it makes me sad) ps. Sorry for my english i'm from Argentina."

anon i’m so glad you asked this because this was the biggest sigh of relief i had leaving the theater. i know carson’s sexuality is never a factor and that’s a huge, important thing to chris regarding this movie, but he was absolutely convincing. i never would have thought he was gay, and my friend (who isn’t a huge follower of his) said she never had a moment where she was sitting there like “oh this is that gay kid from glee.” his acting is so powerful, he’s a completely different person as carson. so yes, i think this will open up HUGE doors for him and he absolutely deserves it. even his little mannerisms and nuances are so clever, i could watch him act all day. completely the opposite of kurt.

pre screening

Post  fantastica on 2/29/2012, 7:56 pm

Chris Colfer & His Fucking Everything: a Struck By Lightning screening post (found this on CCN - not too spoilerish)
http://yayponies.tumblr.com/post/18510519947/sbl-a-post

Yesterday I had the very awesome fortune to accompany my friend Leah and about 100 other invited fans and filming extras to a private screening of Struck By Lightning.

We assumed this was a test audience marketing screening, with questionnaires at the end asking you to rank how much you like each character, how you like the ending, that sort of thing. But only the front half of the theater was filled with extras and fans, while the back half was roped off as reserved. If I had been following any of the SBL news tumblrs (which I haven’t been, because I didn’t want too many spoilers and preconceived ideas getting in my head) I would have caught posts and tweets like this one, which would have explained who all those VIPs were in the back half of the theater—the other 100 people.

It has been kind of hard for me to balance my expectations going into this film, honestly. I first have the bias of adoring the guy and thinking everything he touches will likely turn to gold. Then, yes, Chris is a first-time filmmaker, this is his first script to reach development, he’s still young and has practically no experience on the business and production side. At the same time, though, he was in a very privileged position in the industry to have access to a vastly greater number of resources—human and monetary—than a typical indie filmmaker just making a starving desperate go at their first film. Obviously this kid wasn’t going to have to sell his car to purchase edit bay time.

While I’ve been extremely excited about everything I’ve heard along the way, especially due to the caliber of actors and director he was able to attract to his project, I think a part of me secretly worried and dreaded that somehow, his film would come off as a vanity project that he hadn’t yet earned the chops or paid the dues to make, that non-diehard-Colfer-devotees would just see an overindulged kid making a movie because he got popular on a tv show and he could. Maybe Chris has secretly (or not so secretly) fought the same uncertainty while he was trying to make it.

So the film was being shown to be sold, and I feel pretty honored to have been there for that, because getting sold will mean getting seen, and does this film ever deserve to be seen. It’s so smart, and relatable, and acidic and funny and twisted and tragic and a whole bunch of other adjectives.

It’s hard to know what to say, because in a way it’s kind of unspoilable? As far as movies go. I don’t know if that was an intentional bit of genius in Chris’s narrative choice…but nothing about knowing how it starts and ends matters to the storytelling in between. You see Chris in Carson only that he so badly wants to tell stories…so that he can tell stories. It’s a film about writing, and about needing to write, but really about the need to express, to communicate.

For all the ways Carson wants to find that way out with his words, he’s stuck in the worst disconnect with his mother, who is played by Allison Janney, who is of course fantastic and may seem a little too familiar to some people. Or like deja vu. If you’re me. Anyway, she is great, as is the rest of the supporting cast.

But this is Carson’s film, Chris’s film, so…wow, yes, it’s a lot of time gazing up at Chris Colfer, on a very large screen, through the eye of a Director of Photography who apparently loves Chris even more than we do, because god damn.

This has already been said by basically every single person who has laid eyes on this film, including the director, but truly the greatest thing about looking at Carson is the complete disconnect of any feeling of having seen him before when looking at Kurt—because there is just not a trace. Not in his body, in his walk, in the way he rolls his eyes, or steps off a stair or sits down on a bed. Even the line of his jaw seems different.

Chris always says that his acting is about 75% physical and in this performance, you can see what he means. And though Chris is still of course “a beautiful and subtle actor” (™ Cory Monteith), he gets to be much less subtle as Carson. He’s broader, and not so nuanced, and he inhabits his world differently than Kurt. He’s an outcast, and he’s (ostensibly) queer, but, in the words of Michael Cudlitz’s John Cooper, “he’s got a lot of problems but being gay ain’t one of them.”

It’s still a queer film, and Brian Dannelly has said they are looking at a couple of festivals they think would be a good fit. I dearly hope Outfest is one of those. This movie would already easily be in the top 2% of all dramatic films I’ve ever seen there, and Chris has a ton of good will in the gay community in general and at Outfest in particular. But I hope they sold it last night. I only overheard one post-screening reaction from the so what’d you think? gathering of VIPs by the parking validation machine: “yeah, it was fun! Amazing, actually.”

Fingers crossed and pencils sharpened.

^ thanx for putting them in spoiler tags. I have decided not to read any reviews, no matter how rosy it is, because all reviews are the opinions of someone else. Just look how the same scene in Glee can spark so much debate and so many different intepretations and some people love it while others hate it, reading someone else' words is like allowing other people's impressions seep into my own mind. I want to watch it w/ a fresh mindset so I can form my own opinions. I dont need to match other people's opinions or be in the majority, but my personal enjoyment of this movie will depending on my own intepretation of the scenes and make up my own mind about everything. I may not even like this movie given that I am totally out of its demographics, and I dont have a bad high school experience to relate to, but I want to treat this movie like any other movies. I don't want let other people's opinion ruin my experience.

p.s. Carrie, you can also hide pictures inside the spoiler tag.

Spoiler:
so i was lucky enough to go to the struck by lightning screening last night and while i won’t say anything more about the movie, i will say that while i was there i ran into Roberto Aguirre, who plays Emilio in the film

i saw him standing at the front so i went up and just quickly said a “Hi, you were awesome in the trailer. I can’t wait to see you in the film.” and he got all excited that he was noticed (i was the only one that seemed to recognize him) and he said thank you and that was about it. (i was a bit sad they made us put our phones in the car or i would have asked for a picture. but it was awesome to talk to him at all.)

after the film though he came up to me and my group of friends as we were talking and asked us what we thought and how we liked it. he was incredibly nice and wanted to know our favorite parts and all. he kept saying how proud he was of Chris and kept agreeing when i gushed about different aspects of Chris’s character or about parts i liked. at one point we were joking around and he was saying i had a bunch of good ideas and should have been there when they were making the movie and i was like “oh, i’ll just give you my number then, for next time” and he laughed and was like “Perfect!”

it kind of warmed my heart to see someone else supporting Chris so much in this, and really believing in him.

something very shallow: from the sameTumblr site that did the QnA last night:

Hey I'm so jealous that you got to see SBL Wink Hope you enjoyed it though! And I was just wondering, does Chris take his shirt off at any time of the movie? Do we see any extra skin that all of us fans have been dying to see? (Sorry, I really want to know, I'm such a fangirl when it comes to these things; since Chris STILL hasn't taken his shirt off completely!) Asked by sara333777

Oh don’t worry I was waiting for someone to ask that!!
And unfortunately he stays fully clothed the entire time, but I will say that in this one outfit his pecs were so prominent! I almost fell out of my seat. So, that was good enough for me:)

I kind of hope that Chris doesn't take his shirt off in a movie or on TV for years because some fans are just so crazy about it. LOL
